Martini (Classic)

Base Spirit : Gin
The origins of the Classic Martini are as vague as the sense of feeling that several of these may leave you with. Most likely the name Martini originates from the use of Martini & Rossi Dry Vermouth which was created in 1863. What is likely though is that the Martini cocktail originated in America during the later part of the 19th century.
Today many Martini's are Vodka based, however the original Martini uses the subtle flavours of the Juniper Berry found in Gin. It is because of these delicate flavours that Martini experts always insist that despite James Bond's insistence that his Martini's should be "shaken, not stirred", a Martini should be stirred and not shaken.
Ingredients
  • 3 Measures of Gin
  • 1/4 Measure of Dry Vermouth
  • Cracked Ice
  • 1 Green Olive to Garnish
Equipment
  • Mixing Glass
  • Chilled Cocktail Glass
  • Strainer
  • Cocktail Stirrer
  • Short Drinking Straw
Prepare the Cocktail Glass by filling the glass with Ice and topping up with tap water.
Half fill the Mixing Glass with Ice and then add the Gin and the Dry Vermouth. Using the Cocktail Stirrer, gently stir the contents of the glass for about 10 seconds. Empty the iced water from the Chilled Cocktail Glass before straining the cocktail mix into the cocktail glass.
Garnish with the Green Olive. To finish the look before serving, take the Short Drinking Straw and wet one side of it with tap water, before carefully placing it against the side of the glass. The water should make the straw stick to the glass.
