Origin : Leaving his home of Mallorca, Spain in 1929, Julián Barceló headed to join his brother Andres in Santo Domingo, on the island of Dominican Republic. They founded their own distillery, Barceló & Co. in 1930 and started producing their rum. However, nature conspired against the brothers in their enterprise when the island was hit by one of the countries worst natural disasters, with the 1930 San Zenon hurracaine. Santo Domingo was totally devastated and Barceló & Co. lay in ruins. Soon after, Andres left for Puerto Rico, leaving Julián to continue his dream. Undeterred Julián rebuilt the Company and soon Barceló's quality rums had become an essential reference among the local rum brands.
