Origin : Leaving his home of Mallorca, Spain in 1929, Julián Barceló headed to join his brother Andres in Santo Domingo, on the island of Dominican Republic. They founded their own distillery, Barceló & Co. in 1930 and started producing their rum. However, nature conspired against the brothers in their enterprise when the island was hit by one of the countries worst natural disasters, with the 1930 San Zenon hurracaine. Santo Domingo was totally devastated and Barceló & Co. lay in ruins. Soon after, Andres left for Puerto Rico, leaving Julián to continue his dream. Undeterred Julián rebuilt the Company and soon Barceló's quality rums had become an essential reference among the local rum brands.
As the Company continued to grow, so did Julián's belief that the Company should give back to the local community. So when Julián retired in 1974, leaving the running of the family business to his nephew Miguel Pascual Barceló, Julián continued working on his community foundations.
By the early 1980s Barceló rum was the best selling rum in the Dominican Republic. International recognition beckoned and over the next decade Barceló rum was being exported across the Caribbean, America and several other countries. By 1994 Spain had become the largest market. Today Barceló rum still remains a family business and its rums can be found in more than 50 countries.
